Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University (HBMSU) recognizes the importance of lifelong learning and values prior learning experiences. Our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy is designed to support learners in progressing to new levels by providing opportunities to earn formal qualifications that reflect their existing knowledge and skills. This approach aims to enhance employability, social inclusion, and self-confidence.

RPL involves assessing previously unrecognized skills and knowledge against the requirements of a qualification, thereby encouraging continuous education and training toward formal qualifications.

HBMSU’s RPL program applies to all undergraduate programs, awarding course credits based on experiential or non-classroom-based learning. This policy complies with the regulations set forth in the CAA 2019 Standards.

Application Submission and Evidence
Learners must submit an RPL application accompanied by appropriate evidence demonstrating their prior learning. Evidence should be relevant, sufficient, current, and authentic.

Application Assessment
The RPL Committee, composed of the School Dean, the Registrar, and two faculty members, assesses the applications using rigorous standards comparable to those applied in regular course assessments.

Feedback and Decision
Applicants are notified of decisions within ten working days. If additional information is required, learners are informed and given a deadline to provide it. Approved credits are awarded before the learner’s enrollment in the program.

Appeal Process
HBMSU offers an appeal process for learners to contest decisions regarding RPL credit awards. Details about the appeal process are provided in the feedback shared with applicants.
