Dubai – United Arab Emirates, 27 February, 2019: Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and President of Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University (HBMSU), Innovation Arabia 12 successfully concluded at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (DICEC) after 3 days of highly specialized, scientific and educational discussions and debates on a number of key trending topics impacting the key sectors of the economy in the Arab world. In conclusion of the event, the higher organizing committee announced the theme of Innovation Arabia 13 “Building the Future of Business & Innovation: The Internet of Things (IOT) and People” that will be held from 24 – 26 February, 2020.
Commenting on the successful conclusion of Innovation Arabia 12, Dr. Mansoor Al Awar, Chancellor of HBMSU and Chairman of the Conference’s Higher Committee, said, “Innovation Arabia has once again proved to be a leading platform for us to propose inspirational ideas and innovative solutions in keeping with the UAE’s economic and social development process. At the end of the 12th session, we saw extensive discussions on how to build a culture of innovation to make a radical and positive change in relevant segments such as ‘Quality and Business Management,’ ‘Health and Environment,’ ‘Smart Learning,’ and ‘Artificial Intelligence.’ During the event, the attendees explored new ways of re-conceptualization to help reshape the future that we are all aspiring for under the guidance of our wise leadership. Innovation Arabia was vital to our efforts to highlight the unique experience of Dubai and the UAE, which H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and President of the University, said, ‘They provide a model in developing an incubator environment for innovation and technology, while disseminating inspiring experiences to help establish a knowledge-based economy.’ Under the theme ‘Building Smart Communities: The Balance of Innovation, Change and Transformation,’ the event highlighted the most outstanding smart innovations for sustainable health and environment development, in line with the UAE's ‘Innovation Month.’ The ‘Innovation Month’ captures the vision of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, who puts high priority on innovation as an engine of human development and the key to the expansion of vital sectors.”
From his side, Prof. Stephen Murgatroyd, CEO, Collaborative Media Group, Canada, said, “Over a decade, Dubai has grown on many fronts and today the emirate is witnessing innovation, development and a real spirit of entrepreneurship and responsibility. In my presentation, I put the spotlight on a "jig-saw" of key elements of our future - demographics, global economic shifts, technological change, sustainability, new kinds of organization, new patterns of work, inequality and identity - and looked at the implications of these combined developments for firms and organizations. There are also challenges for public policy for UAE, especially with respect to the link between immigration and employment.”
He added, “Innovation is about doing what's next and doing it well and be ready and willing to respond to the reaction to innovation. In this day and age, we are all going to have to learn to dance with robots - integrate technology into all aspects of our day to day activities at work. Doctors use robots in surgery and AI for diagnosis; educators are using analytics to design better learning and AI to support personalized learning; traffic systems are using AI enables traffic lights and monitoring system to better manage traffic flow; sports teams are using AI enabled video review to improve performance - technology is everywhere and is also underused.”
He further commented, “We need to invest more in the skills development of our people (not necessarily degrees and diplomas, but micro-credentials for skills) and in engaging employers in the re-design of work to fully leverage technology to reduce costs, improve productivity and competitiveness and create better ways of working. We are, over time, going to have to reimagine the place of work in our lives as we are at a tipping point for a new form of capitalism where wealth creation is no longer going to be labor intensive.”
On his part, Dr. Olli-Pekka Heinonen, General Director, Finnish National Agency for Education said, “The UAE and Finland share the same future and there are no ready-made solutions for the global challenges we face tomorrow. In order to overcome our collective challenges, we have to co-operate and co-create sustainable answers together and Innovation Arabia 12 serves as an excellent platform to fulfill such goals.”
Dr. Heinonen stated, “Continuous learning has become more and more important in order to stay relevant in today’s fast changing world and in order to face the challenges that innovation presents us in the future, we should be able to know what kind of action is needed to put our knowledge into practice. For organizations and similarly for nations, the growth mindset is the winning factor, as we either learn to adapt or fail to exist.”
On the third and final day, Innovation Arabia 12 witnessed a number of key discussions under various tracks where a key Quality and Business Management Debate was held on the topic ‘The Ambiguous Perception of Quality in Entertainment’ while an HBMSU Research Seminar was held on ‘Case Research and Development in Harvard Tradition’.

The conference also featured conversations on ‘TQM implementation in social entrepreneurship in the context of UAE and Human Resource Management in Dynamic Environment.

The device monitors driving behavior, impact and accidents, rash driving and over speeding, fuel consumption, vehicle health, and live location of the vehicle. During their presentation, entrepreneurs behind the smart device highlighted that their smart solution will not only increase the profit margins of the fleet owners but also reduce the cost of ownership and maintenance of vehicles. Moreover, the entrepreneurs are planning to partner with insurance companies and provide them tailor-made insurance to fleet owners based upon the driving score of the vehicles in the fleet, which is based on a PHYD (Pay-How-You-Drive) scheme.
